Remington’s World Presents: TuPac Shakur Tribute Artist Richard Garcia “Still I Rise” Interview. Tupac Shakur’s Legacy Lives On 15 Years After Death. At age 25, the rapper succumbed to gunshot wounds 15 years ago today. We were able to reach out to Richard Garcia, an Artist from Jersey City, NJ. Who in every way resembles TuPac Shakur. Check out the interview below along with videos of Richard Garcia.
Remington’s World: First and foremost the resemblance between TuPac and yourself (Richard Garcia) is quite close, at what period in your life did you first realize that you looked like the hip-hop legend? How did you feel? …..
Richard Garcia: “I was in Orange High School in NJ and my friend Charles was cutting my hair and he messed it up so he decided to cut it all off and that’s right about the time TuPac came out with I Get Around video on Yo MTV Raps”
“I instantly gained a lot of female friends and a lot of the guys at that time which today would be known as bullies started to respect me because of my appearance.”
Remington’s World: Were you accepted right away? …..
“Yeah at that time everyone enjoyed it, there really weren’t any haters as TuPac music was a new thing and they started calling me 2Pac”
Remington’s World: Having met both Tupac’s parents and and knowing you have their full support what were the most memorable words either one told you that might have inspired you? …..
Richard Garcia: “I met TuPac’s father 1st, Bill Garland, he said to me you look just like my son, I thought I was watching my son, he said wow it’s amazing. And with Afeni, TuPac’s mother, it was her tears when she hugged me and we hugged each other, I felt a mother son bond in Georgia that day when we met on his and mine birthday, June 16th. She told me no matter what happens with this movie project, she knows she’ll see me in some work for him and doing work for his legacy and in what lies ahead”
Remington’s World: Having the honor to have Won the People’s Vote On www.truthabouttupac.com that you Richard Garcia was the best choice to portray TuPac Shakur in the upcoming bio film have you been seen by the director of the film….
Richard Garcia: “The director, L.T. Hutton retweeted one of my radio interviews where I was rapping TuPac songs, he liked it. Then the casting people approached me and said they were referred to me through someone else that I did independent films for and and they said we heard you would be perfect to play this role and they asked me to send in my audition”
Remington’s World: Apart from sharing Pac’s appearance what other features do both of you share that makes you such a clear choice?
Richard Garcia: “The depth and understanding of his words and lyrics, i can connect to them as we share similar upbringing, our lives are paralleled in many ways and being Gemini, we feel things …I can feel the depth of his words and lyrics and it runs deep in my soul, also his way of thinking. He was positive not negative, what he portrayed as negative was an act, he was quiet more than obnoxious. Another reason people have chosen me is for my voice, there are some who may resemble him more, but their voice isn’t a match at all.”
Remington’s World: Being born June 16th the same birthday as Tupac Shakur and sharing the same zodiac sign do you think maybe the both of you might of have the same views on things like for example if Tupac was still alive what do you think his view his on hip hop would have been…
Richard Garcia: “Hip Hop wouldn’t be the way it is, I don’t even listen to much today as it’s wack. Pac would have influenced the direction it should be, His music hit the masses he was a poet talking about real life not the bs we hear today, he would spit educational shit that would help us grow, political shit, about society, the economy, he would have guided these young generation rappers to focus more on what is going on in everyday life, not about ‘i got 6 cars etc,’ he would say why am i still hustling in the street in 2012 and we don’t have anything. He had political views on how people should change, work and collaborate together. If he was alive today, the Bloods and Crips probably would be working together. He would bring together the worst of our young to search for the truth, none of this molly taking E in lyrics. He would influence the rappers and writers to write about realistic stuff that plaque inner cities, suburban cities, I say that cuz suburbia doesn’t exist anymore. You have kids in the hill getting high, killing their families etc. The divide between the two isn’t there anymore. He would talk about gun violence, and trying to make the gangs unite”
Remington’s World: Which rapper might have PAC got along with?..
Richard Garcia: “Jadakiss, Styles P, 50 Cent, The Game, Eminem, Busta Rhymes”
Remington’s World: Which ones would get a “hit’em up” type track directed at them?….
Richard Garcia: “He wasn’t about beef, he was more for unity”
Remington’s World: Having been on various TV shows and film such as Comedy Central, CBS Blue Bloods, My Life a short film by Lance Burgess and Keith Green which appearance was the most important as far as exposure goes ……
Richard Garcia: “Comedy Central because it was a show with other impersonators for Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Curt Cobain, The Beatles, Whitney Houston, and out of all the people they could have chosen worldwide to represent TuPac, they chose me so that was a huge honor to represent him”
Remington’s World: As of now, what are your future expectations in the industry and goals ….
Richard Garcia: “To do movies, 2Pac tribute shows in Vegas, Atlantic City and overseas and there is a future role besides this one I plan to portray. He’s was a well-known actor from the past who plays various different cultures in a variety of films, but for now this remains a man of mystery because I’m not saying who it is, i don’t want anyone to steal my idea lol, but he’s a legend.”
We wont the world to always remember TuPac for the great music he was able to bring to the industry and he will always be remembered! Thank you Richard Garcia for taking the time to conduct this Q&A. We will sure link up pretty soon for videos!
